NYSOTA Opposes Proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule

Federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services(CMS) proposes a Multiple Procedure Payment Reduction (MPPR) policy for outpatient therapy services that would result in severe payment cuts to medically necessary occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech-language pathology services for Medicare beneficiaries.NYSOTA opposes this proposal as it would impact access to necessary services to individuals.

NYSOTA members are encouraged to voice their concerns by sending letters to CMS. You may use the following letter template to voice your concerns regarding the proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule rule for 2011, published by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the July 13, 2010 Federal Register (CMS-1503-09).  Comments must be received by Donald Berwick, M.D., Administrator of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Servicesby August 24, 2010.

Download the following letter and instructions. You may personalize the letter to include examples of additional concerns. We suggest after the third paragraph, you insert a few personal success stories illustrating the benefits of OT, such as patients that returned home from SNFs after receiving outpatient OT; Changes to quality of life - being able to participate in community activities; reduced need for caregivers; improvements in cognitive abilities.  These need not be Medicare related stories--just stories about the effect of OT .
