Niagara Frontier District Meeting with Jeff Tomlinson, NYSOTA Legislative Chair
Jeff Tomlinson, NYSOTA Legislative Chair will be visiting Buffalo on Thursday October 21st to meet with NYSOTA members and OT practitioners.
MEETING WITH MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONERS (3-5pm)
This afternoon meeting will address mental health practitioners, students, and faculty. This meeting will focus on the future of mental health occupational therapy in New York State and strategies to secure our roles in mental health services (i.e how can we achieve QMHP status for OTs). NOTE: We must encourage all mental health practitioners and educators to attend this very critical meeting.
MEETING WITH ALL OT PRACTITIONERS, STUDENTS, FACULTY (6-8pm)
This evening meeting will address broader OT issues, questions, and concerns related to general OT practice and legislation. Jeff will update us on the status of our OT Practice Act, and efforts by NYSOTA to see this act passed.

Autism Life Skills & Things I Wish I’d Known Sooner
On Saturday, October 9, 2010, Autistic Services, Inc. in conjunction with the Autism Society Western New York Chapter and the Speech-Language-Hearing Association of Western New York (SHAWNY), are pleased to present “Autism Life Skills & Things I Wish I’d Known Sooner.” This half-day workshop features award-winning author, speaker, and parent Chantal Sicile-Kira. During the first half of the workshop, “Things I Wish I’d Known Sooner,” Ms. Sicile-Kira will discuss how parents and professionals can prepare their students- and themselves- for periods of change, as well as emphasize how various parents and professionals with differing viewpoints can come together as a team to move towards a common goal. The second section of the workshop, “Autism Life Skills,” explores life skills such as communication, safety, social relationships, independence, as well as many other components of this positive and powerful “Bill of Rights.”
Ms. Sicile-Kira’s award-winning books include: Adolescents on the Autism Spectrum; Autism Spectrum Disorder; Autism Life Skills; and 41 Things to Know About Autism.
In addition, we are pleased to announce that for the first time ever we are able to offer IACET CEUs for OTs/COTAs/PTs/PTAs through Learning Partners! ASHA CEUs will be available for speech-language pathologists through SHAWNY. The cost and CEU credit information is listed below:

Disabilities Film Festival
The Museum of disABILITY History and People Inc. are pleased to host the 6th Annual disABILITIES Film Festival and Speaker Series. The goal is to provide entertainment and information while exploring issues faced by individuals with disabilities. This year's film is "Profoundly Normal". Based on the true story of Donna and Ricardo Thornton, this film depicts how two individuals with developmental disabilities overcome extraordinary circumstances to build a life together as husband and wife. Donna and Ricardo will speak after the film. Admission: $2, free with student ID
