About Us

New York State Occupational Therapy Association (NYSOTA), which represents over 1000 members, strives to:

  • Support professional ethics and discipline.
  • Promote the standing of occupational therapy as a viable profession in New York State.
  • Foster the highest capability of occupational therapy practitioners to meet the need of changes in society and health care provisions.
  • Advance evidence-based research and education in occupational therapy.

What’s Hot and Happening in 2010!

Strong and Effective Advocacy

  • We’re immersed in the OT practice act amendments – working on your behalf with lobbyists, lawyers and legislators to ensure our amended practice act gets put on the agenda and voted on.
  • OTA supervision – NYSOTA is working with the State Board for Occupational Therapy to discuss regulations that will ensure occupational therapy assistants receive the supervision they deserve and need.
  • Reimbursement issues – we are constantly monitoring the legislation and regulation documents to ensure that occupational therapy reimbursement is supported. A new Governor who wants to overhaul the health care system, especially related to rates. We’re watching your back!
  • An annual Lobby Day in Albany to bring OT to the attention of legislators.

Professional Development

  • Terrific educational programs – the fall conference will be in Saratoga Springs on November 5 – 7, 2009. NYSOTA is an AOTA approved provider of CEU’s – come to us for your continuing education needs.

Networking

  • 8 districts to ensure network opportunities on a local level. Each district offers the opportunity for leadership positions, or just to get together with professional friends and share ideas and concerns.

Effective Communication and Participation

  • 2 Newsletters and 2 News Briefs every fiscal year with district and statewide news – always including a legislative update.
  • An electronic e-update every month to keep you informed of the activities of NYSOTA.
  • A renovation of the NYSOTA website with more accessible information and ease of use. www.nysota.org

Professional Responsibility

  • Participating and supporting NYSOTA is a basic responsibility to ensure that you are prepared to provide the best care for our clients and to ensure that OT remains a strong, viable profession for those who will need our services in the future.
  • And starting in the 2009/2010 fiscal year, a much bigger emphasis on member services.
